2008 top 10 list

2008 Top 10 list.

1.
Cold FactRodriguez
"Sugar Man" (mp3)
from "Cold Fact"
(Light In The Attic)

t’s one of the lost classics of the ‘60s, a psychedelic masterpiece drenched in colour and inspired by life, love, poverty, rebellion, and, of course, “jumpers, coke, sweet mary jane”. The album is Cold Fact, and what’s more intriguing is that its maker — a shadowy figure known as Rodriguez — was, for many years, lost too. A decade ago, he was rediscovered working on a Detroit building site, unaware that his defining album had become not only a cult classic, but for the people of South Africa, a beacon of revolution.

Here they present the evolution of their sound, Light is their debut on Kismet Records.Sub-aquatic bassline, driving beats with reverberated percussion sounds, hypnotic female vocals and synthetic shakers to add extra dimension, perfect for those darken and moody 4am dancefloors. Bonus track Post Remote is a killer peak techno affair. All in all a delightful release!

AlpinismsSchool of Seven Bells
"Half Asleep" (mp3)
from "Alpinisms"
(Ghostly International)

Like many bands before them, School of Seven Bells were born as the result of a late-night revelation. Benjamin Curtis connected with sisters Alejandra and Claudia Deheza in 2004 while their bands—Secret Machines and On-Air Library!, respectively—were on tour. While watching PBS at 3am, Alejandra caught a show about the School of Seven Bells: a mythical South American pickpocket academy that may or may not have existed in the ‘80s. The idea of seven minds working as one appealed to her, as did the phrase’s cryptic musicality, and a creative spark ignited.

5.
PanoramaNathan Fake
"Bored of House" (mp3)
from "Panorama"
(SAW.RECORDINGS)

Throughout our DJ travels Satoshi Tomiie and I have seen, heard and experienced great things. We’ve visited the best clubs around the world and partied with the best of them. The one thing in common with club goers is they appreciate good and well produced electronic dance music. “Panorama” simply shows the diversity and love we have for all style of Dance Music — weather it’s Deep Vocal track by Anthony Middelton (one half of Audiofly) on “Underneath The Sky”, a Tech cut by Jim Rivers on “I Go Deep”, or a classic Techno cut by Nathan Fake on “Bored Of House — Saw Recordings will always stay true to quality.
The hardest part was coming up with a working title for this album - the easiest part was compiling the titles of songs that have given great satisfaction to the punters and to ourselves while on our panoramic journey in life.

On The Sun debuted at #3 on the New Zealand album charts, achieving double platinum sales and solidifying The Black Seeds’ status as one of New Zealand’s premier groups. From a relationship born out of mere office acquaintances in 2001, Sally Shapiro and Johan Agebjorn found common ground in 2004 when an exchange of mix tapes revealed their shared musical taste which included such artists as Madonna, Limahl, Visage, Savage and Fun Fun. After recognizing the potential of Sally’s voice during a session of Christmas carols, Johan wrote the hit single “I’ll Be By Your Side” in early 2005 with the intention of creating something that could capture the sound of the underground 80’s Italo Disco scene.
